Bhubaneswar: The demand for textile materials in the state is 108.64 crore square meter worth Rs 11,995 crore. As against this, the state is producing only 3.36 crore sq.mt worth Rs.410.47 crore. While 1.08 crore sq.mt worth Rs 32.4 crore is produced in powerlooms, 2.28 crore sq.mt worth Rs378.07 crore  in handloom sector . During the last five years textile worth Rs 377.68 crore has been exported from the state.

The state textile minister, Snehagini Churia, told the State Assembly on Saturday that all the 13 spinning mills and 13 powerloom and handloom units set up in cooperative sector have been closed since. By the time the Orissa Textile Mill at Chaudwar in Cuttack district was closed there were 3739 workers were working in the unit. She said that the Mill under the process of liquidation.

The minister said that no new unit has been established in the sector since 2000. Moreover, she added, no investment proposal has been received for the sector.
