Hindalco Hirakud Plant

Bhubaneswar: Hindalco Industries Ltd., an Aditya Birla Group company is proposing to invest Rs 5000 crore to ramp up the capacity of Hirakud Flat Rolled Products unit and also the Utkla Alumina. While Rs 4000 would be invested in the Hirakud unit, Rs 1000 crore in the Utkal Alumina.

The capacity of Hirakud FRP would be enhanced to 3.75  lakh tonnes from the present 1.35 lakh tonnes. Hindalco exports most of the FRP from the Hirakud plant.

The capacity of Utkal Alumina, a 100% subsidiary of Hindalco, would be expanded to 2 million tonnes and then to 3 million tonnes in two phases. The plant is linked to the captive Baphlimali mines which promises huge deposits of low silica bauxite.

Utkal Alumina is currently supplying alumina to the 3.6 lakh tonnes aluminium smelter of Aditya Aluminium in Smabalpur district.

The smelter unit of Aditya Aluminium, another group company, has a 900 MW captive power plant and FRP facilities for rolled products, extrusion products and wire rods.

Meanwhile, Hindalco is planning to rope in Apar Industries for setting up a wire rod conductor making plant near its smelter plant at Hirakud. Hindalco would assure molten aluminium for the downstream unit.

Mumbai-based Apar Industries, a US$ 850 million company,  offers value added products and services in power transmission conductors, petroleum specialties, power and telecom cables.
