Bhubaneswar: The mad rush by the Olive ridley turtles to lay eggs on Gahirmatha beach in Kendrapara district has resulted in damage to millions of egges.
The turtles in a hurry to search a favorable spot for laying eggs in fact dug up existing nests and eggs and caused damage to the eggs unknowingly.
This year over 6.67 lakh sea turtles have arrived so far and estimated to have laid about 8 to 9 crore eggs digging pits. Well, it is feared that about 3 crore eggs might have been destroyed due to the overcrowding of the sea turtle. However, about 0% of these eggs have been destroyed due to the brisk activities of the turtles themselves.
The Assistant Conservator of Forest, G Anand Kumar, said that the turtles were found destroying nests laid earlier by breeding turtles. He said that as specific patches of the beach got overcrowded with turtles, the eggs laid down by early turtles were destroyed.
