Rourkela: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has enriched its varied product basket by successfully rolling out the ASTM A588 Grade-A Plate Mill Plate for the first time. The enterprising effort has helped the Steel Plant in executing an order received from one of its esteemed customers.
Notably, the ASTM A588 Grade- A is a high strength low alloy structural steel with 345 Mega Pascal minimum yield point and is known for its weathering ability. When exposed to external conditions, its corrosion-resistant properties become stronger, even when unpainted. To be precise, ASTM A588 steel has four times corrosion resistance capacity as compared to carbon steel.
That is why, the A588 Grade-A steel plates are suitable for many applications in the bare condition. RSP received a trial order of 400 tonnes of the above grade in the thickness of 32-40 millimetres. Two heats for the special grade were successfully made and the slabs were rolled in New Plate Mill under controlled conditions with accelerated cooling to achieve the desired properties. 60 Tonnes of plates of this grade has been already despatched and about 110 tonnes are ready for despatch. Successful rolling of the special grade steel will not only help RSP to bag more orders from newer market segments but will also boost its bottomline.
