Rourkela: The foundation stone for the 4th Slab Caster and Ladle Furnace with associated facilities of Steel Melting Shop #2, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), was laid by Plant director Atanu Bhowmick on Tuesday.
Plant ED mines A K Kundu, ED P & A Satapathy, ED project PK Sahoo and several CGMs, senior officers and employees of the Projects, SMS-II and Personnel Department, representatives of CET (Consultant of Project) and M/s SMS India Private Limited, New Delhi (Executing agency) were present on the occasion.
It may be noted that, a modern, technologically upgraded, energy efficient and environment friendly 4th Slab Caster and Ladle Furnace will be constructed near Slab Caster#1, with a project cost of about Rs 792 crores.
The major facilities of the new Project will include a Single Strand Caster with capacity of 1 MTPA (Million Ton per annum), a Ladle Furnace of capacity 150 Tons and a new Mould and Segment Repair shop. The new Caster will be a vertical liquid bending type, that will have heat size of 150 Tons, and will make slabs with thickness of 210-250 mm, width of 1050-1850 mm and length of 6000-10500 mm. The other ancillary facilities to come up include a Bulk oil Storage Shed, Emergency overhead water tank, Handling facilities (EOT Cranes, Repair trolley, Electric hoist), elevator, Fire Fighting System, HT/LT substations, Process control & Automation system etc.
A consortium comprising M/s. SMS India Private Limited, New Delhi and M/s SMS group GmbH, Germany will implement the project.
T.P.Sivasankar, CGM(SMS-II), will be the project owner, while S.K.Nayak, GM(SMS-II) will be the project key driver. The execution will be carried out by projects department under project manager D. Prasad, GM(projects).
The new state of the art Slab Caster-4 will improve the operational flexibility of SMS-II in terms of availability of casters and grades of steel to be cast, make-up existing production shortfall and meet future requirements. The Caster will be capable of producing commercial and value added steel grades like API (Oil & gas pipes), Boiler quality (Boiler plates), SAIL forming (Auto components), WTCR, HT(HSLA), SAILMC(chain, clutch plates), LPG(LPG Cylinders),Copper bearing steel, SAILCOR, CRNO(electrical steel) etc.
