Bhubaneswar: Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD), has emerged as the winner in the “Best Integrated Water Management Project” category at the Water Digest World Water Awards 2024-25 organised in the national capital on Monday.
Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, graced the occasion as chief guest and presented the award to Tata Steel followed by the felicitation. Natasha Jha, Head, Projects, Technology and Improvement (FAMD), Tata Steel received the award on behalf of the company.
Acknowledging Tata Steel (FAMD)’s cutting-edge digital technologies to optimise water management processes and drive sustainability in its operations, the coveted award was presented to the steel major at a glittering event organised by India’s premier water magazine Water Digest to celebrate the water warriors and their achievements.
Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge (FAMD), Tata Steel said, “India is a water stressed country and various sectors including agriculture, community and industry are competing for this scarce resource. We are doing our bit to minimise the water consumption in our processes. We are happy to be recognised for our commitment and efforts in adopting innovative digital solutions in our journey towards water stewardship.”
FAMD exemplifies this commitment with initiatives like the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Kamarda and Saruabil mines and the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Sukinda mines in Jajpur district of Odisha, which treat and reuse wastewater. At the Ferro Alloy Plant (FAP) in Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha, innovative measures have been implemented to significantly reduce water consumption. By utilizing treated water from the ETP and scrubber pond water, the plant has decreased its dependency on fresh surface water, achieving over 40% reduction in water usage. Similarly, FAMD has leveraged loT-based smart water management systems to enhance water use efficiency at FAP Athagarh – located in Odisha’s Cuttack district.
