Khopoli (Maharashtra): Tata Steel BSL, formerly Bhushan Steel, has launched Miyawaki Plantation Project within its plant premises located at Sarvoli, here in Rigad district of Maharsatra.
The new afforestation project, launched with technical support of Enviro Creator Foundation, is spread over 2 acres of land with 25,000 trees belonging to 29 local tree varieties.
The project was launched by Tata Steel BSL managing director Rajeev Singhal in presence of CFO Sanjib Nanda, Executive Plant Head, Tata Steel BSL (Khopoli & Hosur) Kapil Modi, VP, Production LDP V Bindoo and Head Finance and Account Control Abhishek Sinha. Co-Founder of Enviro Creator Foundation Dr. Radhakrishna was also present at the occasion.
Miyawaki is a very popular afforestation technique developed by Japanese scientist Akira Miyawaki for growing dense plantations in a short time. Compared to the conventional method of afforestation, Miyawaki forest grows 10 times faster, is 100 time more biodiverse and covers 30 times greener surface area. Miyawaki method also enables up to 30 times or more Carbone -Dioxide absorption as compared to conventional forest. The process followed is 100 % organic and is self-sustaining and requires no maintenance after 2 years.
The Miyawaki forest cover will support 29 native species including as Jamun, Sitafal, Neem, Karanj, Ashopalav, Kaju, Mohda, Bangali Bavar, Saru, Arjun, Bamboo, Aritha, Putranjeeva, Behda. Drumstick, Belpatta, Garmala, Rakta Chandan, Badam, Jackfruit, Peru, Seeta Ashoka, Kajolia, Sewan, Samdi, Gulmohar and Amla.
