New Delhi: The ill-fated Kalinga-Utkal Express was running at a speed of about 100Kmph when it met with the accident, according to sources in Northern Railways.
Kalinga-Utkal Express, between Puri and Haridwar met with a serious accident on Saturday at Khauauli, about 40 km from Muzaffarnagar. The train was going from Puri to Haridwar in Uttarakhand, normally a journey of about 36 hours.
The train suffered heavy damage in the accident last evening at Khatauli, around 40 km from Muzaffarnagar. The train had 23 coaches out of which 13 had derailed.
“The impact of the derailment was such that one of the sleeper coaches of the train climbed over another, while its other end rammed into a nearby house, shattering its facade, and leaving it occupant terrified. Two of the sleeper coaches overturned, with one of them hitting the facade of a local college here.
The NDRF team worked for over 6 hours till the wee hour of 4pm to rescue the survivors and extricate bodies with dignity. The injured were taken to hospitals in Muzaffarnagar and Meerut for treatment.
