Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Tuesday directed the Keonjhar SP and the IIC of Patna police station to submit reports regarding media report of custodial torture of a tirbal man within four weeks time.
The IIC of Patna police station Sandyarani Jena brought Raju Mohanta, a tribal man of Talasaura village in Sharpada block of Keonjhar district, on 25th March to the police station in connection with an agriculture land dispute. She allegedly kicked and beat the tribal man mercilessly in the custody.
The video of the incident went viral and aired in media.
The OHRC, which taking up a petition filed by human rights activist Manoj Jena, has directed the the Keonjhar SP and the woman cop to submit their respective detailed reports on the matter within four weeks. It also directed the government to pay Rs 10,000 interim compensation to the victim within 10 days. Moreover, the OHRC ordered the principal secretary, home department and the Director General of Police, Odisha, to recover the compensation amount from the salary of the woman cop, Sandhyarani Jena, the IIC of Patana police station from the succeeding month.
The Commission has fixed the next date of hearing on 24th June, 2020.
