Bhubaneswar: The Odisha assembly could not transact for most of the day on Friday as the ruling party legislators created a ruckus in the House demanding hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy. The BJD members stood up from the respective seats and shouted slogans disrupting the proceedings as soon as the House assembled on the second day of the monsoon session.
The speker Pradip Kumar Amat adjourned the House till 3 Pm as the din continued for sometime.
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Narasimha Mishra, said because of the disruption of House proceedings a discussion on an adjournment motion on a farmers’ problem moved by Congress could not be taken up. The discussion on the adjournment motion would have exposed the weakness of both the BJP and the BJD, he added.
An all-party delegation of the House was supposed to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand in support of MSP at Rs 2900 per quintal MSP. The Odisha House has, in fact, passed an unanimous resolution demanding hike in the paddy MSP to Rs 2900 per quintal during the last session.
The BJD legislators under the leadership of Debi Prasad Mishra later went to the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to the Governor, addressed to the President, listing their demands such as hike in MSP, Special Category State status and resolution of Mahanadi water dispute.
