Rourkela: The Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP) in June produced pipes of 4.5 mm wall thickness and 12 ¾” outer diameter (OD) in June 2017. This is an improvement of pipes rolled out from the plant with wall thickness of 4.3 mm and 8 5/8 inch OD in May 2017.
Pipes of total one km length with 4.5 mm wall thickness and 12 ¾” OD was produced against the order from M/s Bina Commercial. For achieving these feats, several activities were taken up simultaneously with the help of PPC, HSM with inputs from CMO. These involved modifying the calibration of pre-forming, forming & fin-pass sections, input coil width, flying cut-off section etc.
” When the Steel market is passing through a crucial phase and the dynamics are changing at a rapid pace, RSP is consistently aiming at enriching its product basket and capturing new market segments”, said a plant spokesperson.
Notably, RSP, the only pipe making unit of SAIL can produce Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipes up to grade API-5L-X70. Keeping in view the market demand for lower wall thickness pipes, these two new sizes of pipes have been developed recently, said the spokesperson.
