New Delhi: The Election Commission of India Friday has disqualified 20 MLAs of Aam Admi Party (AAP) for holding office of profit. The ECI has recommended the President to declare them disqualified setting the state for their ouster from the Delhi Assembly.
However, there is no danger to the Arbind Kejriwal government in Delhi. The AAP has a massive majority in the 70-member Delhi assembly with 65 seats, and the impending disqualification will not endanger the Arvind Kejriwal government though the number of party MLAs will come down to 45
The ECI has opined that the MLAs, by occupying the post of parliamentary secretaries between March 13, 2015 and September 8, 2016, held office of profit, and were liable to be disqualified as legislators.
If the President disqualify the MLAs accepting the ECI recommendation, there would be by-polls in the 20 assembly seats.
An angry AAP said that the prime minister Narendra Modi is behind this conspiracy against APP. It also said that the Election Commission had never “touched this low”.
“The EC should not be the letter box of the PMO. But that is the reality today,” AAP leader Ashutosh tweeted.
