New Delhi:Bhartuhari Mahatab, the BJD Lok Sabha member for five times was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2017. The MP from Cuttack received the award from president Ram Nath Kovind, here on Wednesday.
Besides Mahatab, Najma A Heptulla(2013), Hukumdev Narayan Yadav(2014), Gulam Nabi Azad(2015) and Dinesh Trivedi( 2016) were given the award by the president.
Established in 1995, the Award is being given to a member of parliament every year taking into consideration his experience, debating skills, awareness of issues and the depth with which issues he raised. Inter-Parliamentary Group (IPG) which also acts as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) of India gives away this award.
Former prime minister Chrandra Shekhar was the first member to receive this award.
