Bhubaneswar: Odisha Prison Directorate and National Law University Odisha (NLUO) Wednesday signed an MoU for research on prison management.
The MoU.was signed in the presence of chief Justice of Odisha high court and Chancellor of NLUO Dr. S. Muralidhar, DG of Prisons & Correctional Services, Santosh Kumar Upadhya, and NLUO Vice-Chancellor, NLUO Prof. Ved Kumari. The MOU was signed by Prof (Dr) Yogesh Pratap Singh, Registrar, NLUO and Subhakanta Mishra (OJS), DIG of Prisons (HQ), on 26th January 2022 in NLUO. The other dignitaries present on the occasion include Samir Ranjan Sahoo, Asst. Director cum Registrar, Mahatma Gandhi Academy of Prisons and Correctional Services, Bhubaneswar.
The purposes of this MoU are to set up an institutional mechanism (“Collaboration And Research Enterprise” (CARE)” for collaboration between faculty and students of NLUO and Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services (DP & CS) on matters relating to Prisons; to organise training programme focused on knowledge, attitude, skills and ethics in prison administration and to offer a joint PG Diploma on “Rehabilitation and Correctional Administration”.
The objectives of this partnership are to promote recognition and rehabilitation of prisoners; to develop a collaborative knowledge between DP & CS and NLUO; to conduct action research for improving prison administration; to collaborate on various research activities for students and faculties of both NLUO and Prison and training for State Prison Officials; to explore ground realities relating to prisons and prisoners; to conduct awareness and sensitisation programmes in schools and colleges relating to prisons and prisoners.
Regular Academic Conferences/Workshops/Discussions shall be conducted by DP & CS and NLUO jointly on issues related to Prisons & Correctional Administration.
DP & CS will facilitate visit of the students to Prison Academy and specific prisons during the internship period.
The NLUO will organise training programmes for prison officials to enhance their knowledge, attitude, skills and ethics relating to prison administration.
The NLUO in collaboration with DP & CS will conceptualize and offer PG Diploma in “Rehabilitation and Correctional Administration” from the year 2022. The course will be offered in distance and online mode. The programme is intended to be attended by the prison officials/persons who want to join prison services and others interested in reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners. The course is open for all persons in India and abroad.
The curriculum of this course would enhance the understanding of prison employees and others on matters pertaining to incarceration, correctional practices and challenges faced by the criminal justice system in India and possible ways forward.
The eligibility for admission to PG Diploma programme shall be a Graduate Degree in any stream from any recognized University in India and abroad. The PG Diploma shall follow interdisciplinary approach.
The duration of PG Diploma shall be of one year duration divided in two semesters. Participants shall be required to complete the PG Diploma programme within maximum time span of three years from the date of admission by availing maximum three chances to clear each paper.
Number of seats for the PG Diploma programme shall be 60 (Sixty).
15% of the seats shall be reserved for individuals from the Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for individuals from the Scheduled Tribes, and 5% for persons with disabilities. 25 % seats will be reserved for domicile of Odisha.
The Annual Fee for PG Diploma is Rs 8,500.00 for all but the fee is exempted for the Prisons & Correctional Services Officers from the state of Odisha.
Persons desirous of joining the PG Diploma programme shall register for the course by submitting an online application, at National Law University Odisha.
