Bhubaneswar: An Odisha police officer was caught by State vigilance police for collectiing protection money in the style of Mumbai hafta practices.
Sk. Habibur Raheman, sub-inspector (SI) of police , Khandapada police station in Nayagarh district Monday arrested by Odisha vigilance police while demanding monthly protection money from a local businessman. Vigilance police aressted the SI red-handed while he was receiving the monthly amount of Rs 3000 from the small time businessman.
According to vigilance police, Sk. Habibur Raheman has been apprehended by Odisha vigilance for demanding and taking monthly money of Rs.3,000 from the tradeର to allow him to carry out his business. Earlier, he had allegedly taken bribe Rs.15,000/- from the trader, but was regularly harrassing him for more. Based on the above complaint, a trap was laid on 21.10.2024, wherein the accused Sk. Habibur Raheman, SI was caught by the team of Odisha vigilance in his rented house at Khalisahi for demanding and taking bribe money from the complainant. The entire bribe money was recovered from the possession of Sk. Raheman and seized in presence of witnesses. Right hand wash as well as pant pocket wash of Sk. Raheman gave positive chemical reaction, confirming acceptance and handling of bribe money by him. Following the trap, simultaneous searches have been launched on the rented residential house of Sk. Raheman at Khalisahi under PS-Khandapada police station and house at native village Karadapalli in Tigiria of Cuttack district. Accused Sk.Habibur Raheman, SI has been arrested and is being forwarded to the Court. In this connection, Bhubaneswar Vigilance PS Case No.21 dated 19.10.2024 U/s 7 Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 has been registered and is under investigation.
